While Mary Sanders is not native to Jasper, she is glad it has been her home for the last 25 years! She grew up in Hendersonville, Tennessee, earned a BA from Rhodes College and an MA from Emory University. Even though her degrees were in English Literature, she has always been interested in medicine and caring for people. During college she was a chaplain intern for a cardiac unit in a Memphis hospital and helped with hospice while living in Tuscaloosa. In Jasper, she volunteered at Hope Clinic and served on its Board.
Mary has taught at Shelton State and Bevill State Community Colleges, written children’s mission material for a national Baptist publisher, helped do public relations writing, edited and proofread a great variety of things, and currently works as bookkeeper for Maddox, Thornley, and Sanders law firm and The Mosquito Authority. Besides volunteering and working as volunteer coordinator and a board member for Hope Clinic, she has worked at the EASI barn as a feeder, served on the Natatorium board, and helped with school PTO activities in addition to the odd assortment of things that accompanied being a sports mom.
Mary has been married to her husband Ed since 1991. They have two great kids: Ned, who is getting his Master’s in Tax Accounting at Alabama (Roll tide!) and Bonnie who is getting her degree in Health Services Administration at Auburn (War eagle!). They worship, minister, and teach at Jasper’s First Baptist Church. Mary enjoys Bible study, walking and swimming, reading and all things books, playing the piano and French horn, and traveling. She looks forward to helping her community by serving on the Capstone Clinic Board of Directors.
