Our History

2001

Capstone Health opened in June 2001 as a nurse-managed center and operated as a Certified Health Center with a goal to deliver family centered, quality primary health care to areas. This was made capable by the University of ALabama, Capstone College of Nursing, and Professor Dr. Jeri Dunkin; the initial funding was received from the Division of Nursing, Bureau of Health Professions, Health Resources and Services.

2007

The Department of Health and Human Services awarded Capstone Health a Section 330 grant as a Federally Qualified Health Center in 2007. Capstone Health relocated to a larger facility on Highway 269 in Parrish to better serve patients and the community.

2015

With a passion for serving others, on a leap of faith and in collaboration with long-time community partner Northwest Alabama Mental Health Authority, Capstone Cottage opened in February 2015. Located near the heart of downtown Jasper, Capstone Cottage became the second primary care location for Capstone Health. This collaboration improved access to primary care and behavioral health services for many individuals linked with Northwest Alabama Mental Health.

2015

In 2015, Capstone Health was awarded a New Access Point grant through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act to support a new delivery site in the rural northwestern area of Walker County. This allowed Capstone Health to open Capstone Nauvoo, a third primary care location, in August 2015.

2016

Within six months, Capstone Health expanded services, to reduce the burden of medication costs for patients whether insured or uninsured, and opened Capstone Pharmacy, located inside the Capstone Nauvoo clinic, in February 2016. Capstone Pharmacy served 610 patients and filled over 8,400 prescriptions during Year-1.

2018

Capstone Health continued expansion of services such as Integrated Behavioral Health in a Primary Care model, which led to outgrowing the Capstone Parrish facility. In November 2018, Capstone Health completed the construction of a new Parrish facility. The Facility includes 10 patient rooms, 3 dental operatories, lab, pharmacy, behavioral health consultation rooms, and a group therapy room. This was a result of funding received from the Human Resources and Services Administration Health Infrastructure Investment Program grant, Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, Walker Area Community Foundation, Alabama Regional Commission, and USDA Rural Development Program.

2019

After 18 years of serving Walker County, Capstone Health saw the need for a safety-net provider to serve Winston County and Capstone Arley, a fourth primary care location, was opened. But Capstone Health did not stop there, a second Capstone Pharmacy site, located inside the Capstone Parrish clinic, was also opened. Both opening on December 1, 2019!

2020

In 2020, Capstone Health was awarded a Health Center Program New Access Point grant to improve the health of underserved and vulnerable populations by expanding access to affordable, accessible, quality and cost effective primary health care services. This allowed Capstone Health to open a second primary care location in Winston County, Capstone Double Springs, in January 2020.

2020

The Dr. Buddy L. Thorne Dental Suite, located inside the Capstone Parrish clinic, opened August 2020, providing Preventative Dental services including exams, x-rays, extractions, fillings, and emergency treatment. This was a result of funding received from the Human Resources and Services Administratrion Oral Health Infrastructure grant and community supporters such as the Walker Area Comunity Foundation. Integrated oral health, behavioral health, medical, and pharmacy services are all under one roof improves access for patients' healthcare needs.

2021

In collaboration with long-time community partner Jasper Area Family Services Center, Capstone West Jasper opened April 2021. Located inside the old West Jasper Elementary School in walking distance to Jasper Public Housing, Capstone West Jasper is the sixth primary care location for Capstone Health. This collaboration brings access to Adult Education classes, Cooperative Parenting & Generations, Early Head Start, Court Referral Education Program, Fatherhood Initiative, HIPPY, Jasper Area Ministerial Emergency Services, Literacy Council of Walker County, Supporting Parents, Strengthening Families, Thrive Together Walker COunty, and Walker County Children's Policy Council provided by Jasper Area Family Services Center. All under one roof!

2021

Capstone Viking Health opened as the first-ever School-Based Health Center for Capstone Health. Located inside Jasper High School, faculty and students of the Jasper City School System have access to behavioral health services via a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
